Downton Abbey ~ Lady Mary

It had to happen eventually: a Downton Abbey post. I've been avoiding writing about this television series because, well, everyone else has been, and I can't add anything new. But honestly, I'm in mourning! The Fabulous Boyfriend and I both adore this show, and having just finished the season 2 finale, we must now wait impatiently until the next season begins. So, I'll sprinkle in a post here and there about my favorite bits of the show.

Aside from the fantastic screenplay and wonderful acting, I've been swooning over the clothes. This is my favorite era for fashion, and the costume designer just nailed it. I'm most drawn to the outfits worn by Lady Mary; they've given her a darker aesthetic with rich colors and liberal amounts of black. I could happily dress like this every day.

While shopping today, my mind was on SPRING. I couldn't pass up these adorable shoes from Rampage. Wedges work for me - they're the only way my battered dancer's feet can wear heels. These were not so high that my over-40 self would look ridiculous, and sleek enough to wear to the office. I like the modern/vintage vibe.

Chocolate as Art ~ Dancing Lion

Have you ever tasted something so divine that it moved you to tears? That is precisely what happened to me upon my first sip of Dancing Lion's drinking chocolate. The flavor was exquisitely beautiful: delicately nuanced, yet rich, bold, and intoxicating. I knew that not only did the person who created this possess great technical skill with chocolate, but had a deep, passionate love affair with it. I was enraptured.

My partner, George, first learned of Dancing Lion while watching a feature on a local television show. Knowing how much I adore chocolate, he excitedly told me about it, and we planned to go the following weekend. Prior to our visit, I explored their website, and knew it was going to be a very special experience after reading this about owner/chocolatier, Richard Tango-Lowy:

I first encountered the True Soul of chocolate in 1995. For fifteen years I have sought her subtle nuances, studied her moods, struggled to understand her complex temper. She is a most difficult mistress; coquettish and proud, quick to anger, open only to the most patient of overtures.

I’ve learned to prepare her in the ancient ways of the Maya and in the gleaming kitchens of the finest Parisian chocolatiers. I have studied her at ecole Chocolat in Vancouver and at the prestigious Ecole du Grand Chocolat Valrhona in the Rhone Valley of France. I am proud to count among my friends some of the finest chocolatiers from Montreal to Melbourne to Guatemala.

Chocolate is my passion. I will never master her–who can master one so willful and tempestuous? But I will continue to woo her and to craft a small bit of her soul into each truffle and bonbon I create.

For chocolate is art. And as art she is magnificent.

The shop was very busy during our first visit, as many others who had seen the TV special were also there. The decor was lovely - earthy, warm, and relaxing. A bit unsure where to start, we finally decided to order the drinking chocolate with blood orange (in a "frothy bowl")...and the swooning began. We also purchased several truffles which we savored at length later that day. The woman working the counter, Kathy, was very kind and knowledgeable, helping us with our purchase and talking about Rich's background. I was hoping to tell Rich how much I loved his chocolate, but we only got a brief glimpse of him that day.

The shop was more quiet during our second visit, so George and I got the chance to speak with Rich at length. He talked about each of the truffles and bars as though they were beloved children. From his meticulous selection of his cacao suppliers, to how he gently coaxes the exquisite, complex ingredients to blend and mingle into one perfect truffle, bar, or drinking chocolate, his passion is beautifully manifested in his art. I told him about my "teary-eyed" experience, and he smiled and said, "Our tagline was almost 'chocolate that makes you cry'." Try it, and I bet you'll agree. And don't miss the croissants; they're the best I've tasted outside of Paris.

I can't believe how fortunate we are to have such a place less than an hour from home!
If you live in New England (or plan to visit), I can't implore you enough to visit Dancing Lion. If you're not closeby, call them...they may just be able to deliver some heaven to your door.

During winter, the dry air makes my hair all static-y, so I usually end up putting it in a twist. I really like this cute variation - it's more "styled" than a plain bun, but still looks relaxed (although, I definitely wouldn't go through the process of curling my hair first - too lazy!).

Steve Tyler is this area's local celebrity. He grew up here, met Joe Perry here, and one of the first things you're told when you move here is that "you might see Steve and Liv once in a while". I did meet him briefly a couple of times, and he was down to earth and friendly, quick to laugh. I worked with Joe Perry's mom for a while, and she loved to wear her Aerosmith leather jacket everywhere. At first I thought she was just a hip older lady into rock music, until someone informed me of the connection. Duh.

Anyway, I came across this clip of Steve and Oprah touring around the lake (just a few minutes from my house), and thought you might get a kick out of it. Love the car.

Honey Mulled Wine Recipe

Winter has officially arrived, and in my corner of the world, it's time to hunker down and try to stay warm...I think I'll try this as an accompaniment to a warm fire and a good book this weekend!

Honey Mulled Wine Recipe

Cook time: 10 minutes

Make sure you use a wine that you like to drink! If it isn't good cold, it's not going to be any better hot.

Ingredients

1 750ml bottle of zinfandel, or other full-bodied robust red wine that you enjoy drinking
3/4 cup of water
3/4 cup of honey
15 black peppercorns
3 inches of cinnamon stick for the wine, more sticks (optional) for serving
Thin peels of lemon zest for serving

Method

Into a 2-qt saucepan, put the wine, water, cinnamon stick, peppercorns, and honey (if you are unsure about the sweetness level, start with less honey and add more to taste). Heat until steamy and lightly simmering.
Strain into glass mugs. Serve with a thin strip of lemon zest and a bit of cinnamon stick.
Yield: Makes one quart. Serves 5 to 6.

When my mother was a toddler in the early 50s, my grandparents moved to Copenhagen, Denmark, for five years while my grandfather worked at the American Embassy. When they returned to the States, they continued to celebrate the Christmas traditions of their beloved adopted country, eventually sharing them with all of us.

And then there is this dessert:

Ris a la Mande (rice pudding with almonds). The cherry topping is a must. I just adore it! To follow tradition, add one whole almond to the batch, and the person who ends up with the almond in their serving gets a special little gift. Find the recipe here.

And because the Danes can't get enough cherries, finish off the night with some Cherry Heering. It was the first liqueur I ever tasted....wonderful.

Bohemian Vegetable Soup

A hearty vegetable soup perfect for winter (I have a thing for barley). Recipe courtesy of The Saturday Evening Post.

(Makes 8 to 10 servings)

2 gallons water or beef stock
1/2 cup barley
1 bunch carrots, peeled and chopped
2 onions, peeled and chopped
4 potatoes, peeled and diced
2 stalks celery, sliced
1 cup turnip, diced
1 bay leaf
4 basil leaves or 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1 bunch parsley
2-3 tablespoons tamari (soy sauce)
4 tablespoons margarine
1/2 cup whole wheat flour

Put water, beef stock, or water fortified with beef base into large pan, bring to boil. Add barley, simmer 1 hour.
Prepare vegetables, add them and tamari to soup. Cook until vegetables are almost tender.
Heat margarine in small saucepan. Stir in flour, cook 1 minute. Add 2 cups stock, stir until well blended. Add mixture to soup. Simmer until soup thickens. Taste for seasoning, adding more tamari if necessary. Serve in large tureen. Accompany with slabs of thick dark buttered bread.

If you're ever travelling through the Lake Sunapee region in New Hampshire, stop by this great tavern in New London. Not far from my home, it's one of my favorite places to eat in the area. The food is unpretentious and hearty, and they have the BEST mustard I've ever had (they serve it with a basket of pretzels when you arrive, and you can buy jars of it). It has a rustic old-world pub atmosphere, and folk or rock music hums in the background. Visit their website for the menu and directions.

I've never had a bad dish there, but especially good is the onion soup, any of the tavern sandwiches, and the carrot cake!

the art of the letter

My grandmother sends me lovely handwritten letters regularly. I cherish them. Her sentiments are always sweet and thoughtful, the stationery beautiful, and her handwriting always reveals something about her mood or how she's feeling physically...the latest showed she was probably a bit tired. I love to re-read them when I'm feeling in need of her encouraging spirit. As I held her note, I started to think about about the (lost?) art of letter writing.

In this age of instant digital communication, I wonder how many people actually write letters anymore? I remember a time when anticipating a letter from a friend or loved one was exciting. Even the waiting had a certain romance about it. I accepted the fact that it would take a few days for the letter to arrive; it was just the way of things.

So, while emailing and the like have obvious benefits, for me, it will never replace the letter. Can a lover tuck a rose petal in an email? A friend send a bookmark in a text message? Doodle in the margins of an instant message? Can you tie up digital communication with a pretty ribbon and tuck it away in a special box? Maybe I'm revealing my inner fuddy-duddy, but I'm sad for my children's generation; many of them may never experience the unique beauty and charm of handwritten letters.

I think I'll write my son and daughter each a letter this week...and doodle in the margins.

I've been to Seattle several times, but my most memorable trip was when my daughter was living there; she took me on my first visit to Pike Place Market. A farmer's market situated on Elliot Bay, it has an amazing array of food, art, handmade crafts, and restaurants. Her boyfriend at the time worked at one of the produce stands, and they both love to cook, so needless to say we ate very well! You must visit if you're ever in the area. Here was one of our days there...

He was very drawn to Montmartre, an area of Paris known for its bohemian lifestyle - it was frequented by many artists, writers, and philosophers. I am so fortunate to live in a beautiful area of the world. New England has it all - lakes, mountains, ocean, the four seasons. This spot is less than three miles from my home, and I visit often. I took these shots last summer. I feel like that granite bench was put there just for me, and it's where I tell the lake all my secrets.

Shabby Chic?

I'm very late to the Shabby Chic party. During its heyday in the 90s, Rachel Ashwell's style failed to move me. Looking at her rooms, I thought, "Where's the color? The pattern? The funk?". It just seemed so sedate and...well...girly. Not my taste at all.

Or so I thought.

Fast forward to the present, and I'm seeing shabby chic sneak its way into my home. It started in the bedroom, where I was looking for the perfect wall color. I fell in love (unexpectedly) with Benjamin Moore's "Boudoir" - the perfect vintage pink. I wasn't even entertaining pink as an option; it looked beige on the card. But when I put it on my walls...magic. I loved it.

So, off went the earth toned bedspread and on went the white puffy comforter, lace at the windows, and white paint on the trim. Burgundy - the color I can't live without - had to stay. Fortunately, my burgundy velvet curtains and accessories fit in perfectly, and gave the room that shot of rich color that I need.

While the downstairs living area is still dressed in earth tones, I revel in my fresh new bedroom. Now my earthy bohemian side and my romantic girly side both have places to live.

I took this photo just after my friends had left a recent party I had...I lit maple scented candles and served a punchbowl filled with hot cider (with spiced rum, natch!). My cottage smelled amazing. It was a great night!

I adore my family. Every one of them. We love each other, respect each other's boundaries, and know that we can call anyone during trouble and they'd be there in a heartbeat. We're all weird in our own little ways, but that's part of the fun. I'm a fortunate girl!

Here are a few "blast from the past" photos from my mom's side...

My elegant grandmother. Here she's in her early 20s (1942?). Love the peeptoes! She's 93 and still going strong (so is grandpa!).

Here she is at her high school graduation, 1935. Her mother, a seamstress, made that gorgeous dress.

Two of my aunts and uncle. I'm on the right (age 14). Circa 1980.

1976? I'm the dorky kid looking up at my mom.

Just had to do a little bragging today - below is a picture of a stained glass panel my mom made for a customer. It's going to be installed in their kitchen. I just love it, and my talented mom! If you'd like to see more of her work, you can visit her website: Sally's Stained Glass. She can do everything from nightlights to suncatchers to kitchen cabinets, and she loves custom orders. She even has a small claim to "fame" - Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills & Nash commissioned her to do a panel for his home in California.

My grandmother taught me the art of setting a "proper" table, but lately I've just gotten lazy (paper towels for napkins, anyone?), and I'm just not a formal sort of gal anyway. But, when I came across the gorgeous table settings created by the talented Bill at Affordable Accoutrements, they inspired me to step up my game for my next dinner guests!

I chose three settings I loved, and they each have distinct feeling about them. Which is your favorite?

Book:

I bought this when it was first published (1999), and re-read this beautiful book every year. Pen/Faulkner nominee. It's also been made into a movie, but I haven't watched it - just have a feeling it will ruin the magic (but if you've seen it, do comment and perhaps allay my fears!).

Listening to Sara's soulful voice is always a pleasure.

Movie:

Just watched this for the first time the other night ~ classic 70s American cultural film about a woman regaining her bearings after her husband leaves her for a younger woman - minus the cliches and stereotypes. Sprinkled with great humor and ultimately uplifting, it garnered several Academy Award nominations: Best Picture, Best Actress (Jill Clayburgh), and Best Writing & Screenplay. Great performances.

Smell:

If I were a fashion designer, I'd want to be Nanette Lepore; her boho chic style really speaks to me. Her designs look like something the average woman could actually wear - down to earth, comfortable, and fun.

An Ohio native, Nanette first displayed her love for fashion when, at the age of nine, she outfitted a neighbor in a floral bedspread, beaded choker, and face paint. After completing her undergraduate studies at Youngstown University, she headed to NYC to make her mark.

She's also branched out into perfumes. My favorite is her 2009 release, Nanette...I've reviewed it on my fragrance blog. It's perfect for the fall/winter season.

I've also included some shots of her apartments.

Stairways to Heaven

I've had a "thing" for stairs for as long as I can remember. To me, they represent an adventure, an invitation to explore something new. One of the (many) things that sold me on my cottage was the black wrought iron spiral staircase that leads to the bedroom loft. Climbing those stairs makes me feel like a princess ascending to her chambers (small chambers though they be).

Whether grand or humble, indoors or out, it doesn't matter; I just can't resist following where they lead...

Ah, that's better ~ it's nice and warm inside. Today we will be enjoying a relaxing afternoon pot of tea and a special chant for peace...

TEA FOR RELAXATION:

1 tablespoon English breakfast tea
1 teaspoon elder flower
2 teaspoon rose hips
1 teaspoon chamomile
2 teaspoon hops
1 teaspoon valerian

Chant:

"Show us the charm of flowers, sing us the spell of peace"

Mexican Hot Cocoa!

If you've never tasted Mexican hot cocoa, you're in for a serious treat. Even if you have, this recipe is the best I've tried, so get ready to take your cocoa to the next level!

The secret is chili powder & cinnamon. They complement the cocoa to perfection and give it a spicy kick. If this doesn't warm you up on a cool night, nothing will! Thick, rich, and sinfully decadent, it's best to share it with someone special... ;-)

Ingredients:

2 cups reduced-fat (2 percent) evaporated milk
1/2 cup whole milk
1/2 cup chocolate liqueur
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup sugar
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ancho chili powder
10 cinnamon sticks
1 dried red chile
2 1/2 ounces bittersweet chocolate, broken into pieces
1/4 cup heavy whipping cream

Preparation:

Whisk evaporated milk, whole milk, liqueur, vanilla, sugar, cocoa, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and chili powder in a heavy saucepan. Add 2 of the cinnamon sticks and chile and cook gently over medium-low heat until warm. Add chocolate and cook, whisking until melted. Gently bring to a high simmer; reduce heat and simmer until liquid thickens and reduces slightly, whisking often, 10 minutes. Combine heavy cream with remaining 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon and beat until peaks form. Ladle 1/3 cup hot cocoa into each of 8 teacups; top with 1 tablespoon whipped cream and garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Vignettes

I love intimate spaces. One of the (many) benefits of having a small cottage is that little decorative vignettes don't seem out of place. When I lived in a large home, I had to decorate in bold strokes - huge artwork, overscaled furniture, etc. Now that I'm living cozier, I can revisit my love of "downscaled" decorating. And, truthfully, it doesn't feel like decorating per se, but rather a visual extension of my true self. And isn't that the the best part of having a home - creating a haven that reflects the soul?

Cemetary walk, anyone?

It was one of those perfect New England autumn days today - warm, crisp air, bright sunshine, crunchy leaves underfoot. Swell time for a cemetary walk, wouldn't you say? Now, I've always thought of cemetaries as creepy places - still do - but on a pretty day like today, it seemed harmless enough (I might think twice under a full moon!).

I've lived in this hamlet for almost nine years, but this was my first visit to the local cemetary. It sits (as many old New England cemetaries do) behind the local church. I was the only visitor this afternoon, so I took my time and really explored. It was interesting looking at the headstones; some were simply made, others quite elaborate with impressive craftsmanship. I wondered what the faces, personalities, and lives were like of the people who passed on so long ago...

It was an oddly meditative place, encouraging me to pause and reflect on my own mortality, reminding me to drink in each day, each moment. I must say, I enjoyed my time there. And since it's only a five minute walk from my cottage, I'll be back.

Halloween is just around the corner, and I'm getting into the spirit! I'm hosting a Witches Party on October 29th, and I spent some time today creating decorations...

Found these Martha Stewart (I know, I know) labels and couldn't resist. I washed the labels off of some wine bottles and replaced them with these...I think they look great!


Bought this blank metal frame (there's a raven on the top that I didn't get in the photo), and I decorated it with some stickers.

I also found a fabulous witch's hat and broom...will post those later! Are you doing anything special this Halloween?
